Glass Tiger, a rock band from Newmarket, Ontario, was founded in 1980 by Alan Frew (vocals), Sam Reid (keyboards), Al Connelly (guitar), Wayne Parker (bass), and Michael Hanson (drums). Initially performing under the name Tokyo, they landed a contract with EMI Music Canada after opening for Culture Club in 1984.

Their debut album, The Thin Red Line (1986), became Canada’s fastest-selling debut, achieving gold certification within weeks and later earning four Platinum certifications in Canada and Gold in the U.S. The album featured major hits like “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone)” and “Someday,” co-written with Jim Vallance, a frequent collaborator of Bryan Adams, who also provided vocals on the former track.

Their second album, Diamond Sun (1988), reached Double Platinum in Canada and produced popular singles such as “Diamond Sun” and “I’m Still Searching.” This was followed by 1991’s Simple Mission, which went Platinum and included the Rod Stewart duet “My Town.”

Between 1986 and 1987, Glass Tiger won five Juno Awards and received a Grammy nomination in 1987. In 1988, Chris McNeill replaced Hanson as the band’s drummer, solidifying their lineup for years of extensive touring.

In 2005, to mark their 20th anniversary, they released a DVD, No Turning Back, which featured live performances, new songs, and behind-the-scenes footage from their tours with Tina Turner and The Chieftains. That same year, they performed on NBC’s Hit Me, Baby, One More Time, revisiting their classic hit “Don’t Forget Me (When I’m Gone).” A live album, GT Live, followed in 2006.

Glass Tiger remains active, performing over 50 shows a year. In 2008, Alan Frew published The Action Sandwich, a book reflecting on his life as a touring musician. The band also demonstrated their commitment to their fans and communities by visiting Canadian troops in Afghanistan in 2009. Their legacy as one of Canada’s most beloved rock bands continues to thrive.
